Dry Wells
A dry well is a large perforated bucket with large rocks inside it, to which are connected pipes coming from your downspouts, french drains, or sump pump.
Typically, they are used in conjunction with your gutters and downspouts.
Instead of the downspouts pouring water directly into the earth around your foundation, you can instead direct all the water that falls on your roof into the drywell, at a more removed site in your back yard.
This will eliminate pooling water around your foundation and prevent dampness, moisture and basement flooding. Dry wells can also be used to connect to a french drain system around your home. The water that is collected from the french drains needs a destination, and a dry well is an attractive solution.
Sump pumps can also be connected to a dry well. In this case, the water collected from the inside perimeter of your foundation will be pumped up to pipes that lead to the dry well.
If you are experiencing severe basement problems you may want to do a three-level drainage system consisting of downspouts, french drains, and a sump pump all connected to a dry well or dry wells.
